Getting the Most from Your Screen and Speakers

Good picture and sound rarely come from a single purchase. They come from how a TV, soundbar or speaker system works together with the room it sits in. A few practical habits make a bigger difference than most spec-sheet upgrades.

Start with the room

Light and acoustics shape what you see and hear. A bright window opposite the screen washes out contrast, so consider curtains or angling the set away from direct sunlight. Hard, bare surfaces such as tiled floors and empty walls make dialogue sound harsh and echoey. A rug, soft furnishings or a bookshelf can tame reflections at no real cost.

Check your picture settings

Many TVs ship in a bright "store" or "vivid" mode that exaggerates colour and sharpness. Switching to a Movie, Cinema or Filmmaker mode usually gives more natural colour. Turning off motion smoothing for films often helps too. If you are still deciding on a set, our guide to choosing a 4K TV explains which features matter for different rooms and viewing habits.

Fix the sound before upgrading it

Built-in TV speakers are compromised by slim cabinets, so dialogue is often the first thing to suffer. Before buying anything, try any dialogue or clear-voice setting your TV offers. Also check that audio is being sent in the format your equipment supports. When you are ready to add hardware, our notes on what to look for in a soundbar cover connections such as HDMI ARC and eARC, and they explain why placement just below the screen matters.

Mind the connections

  • Use HDMI ports that support the features you need, such as 4K at higher refresh rates for gaming consoles.
  • Keep firmware on the TV and audio devices up to date, since updates often fix sync and compatibility issues.
  • If lip-sync drifts, look for an audio delay or AV sync adjustment in the settings menu.

Small, deliberate changes like these let you judge what your current setup can really do. Then any upgrade you choose solves a genuine problem rather than a guessed one.
